Year 6 offers a broad and engaging curriculum that builds on pupils’ learning while preparing them for the transition to secondary school. Alongside a strong academic focus, pupils are encouraged to develop confidence, independence and resilience. Year 6 is also the year pupils sit their SATs, and throughout the year they are carefully supported to build confidence, manage pressure and feel well prepared. A strong focus on wellbeing, outdoor learning and enrichment ensures pupils complete their primary education feeling proud of their achievements and ready for the next stage of their learning journey.
The year begins with a unit exploring what it is like to live in a big city, using London as a focus. This learning is brought to life through a residential visit to London, where pupils explore key landmarks including the London Eye and St Paul’s Cathedral. Pupils then complete an in-depth study of World War II, including a visit to the Cumbria Museum of Military Life in Carlisle, helping them to understand how the war changed life in Britain and impacted the local area.
During the Spring term, pupils focus on protecting the environment, learning about rivers, flooding and conservation, including how Cumbria is working to reduce the risk of future flooding. This includes investigating floods that have affected the local area. The Summer term supports pupils with their transition to secondary school, while also celebrating their final months of primary education. Children explore natural disasters, take part in outdoor and adventurous activities such as paddle boarding on Ullswater, and prepare for a Year 6 leavers’ performance. Time is also given to reflect, celebrate achievements and enjoy the end of their primary school journey.
