In Year 2, our curriculum is designed to spark curiosity, creativity and a love of learning, while helping children develop a strong understanding of the world around them. Learning is carefully sequenced to build knowledge, skills and confidence across all subjects.
Throughout the year, children explore significant people and ideas that have shaped the world. They learn about pioneers of flight, famous inventors and influential authors, including Beatrix Potter and J. K. Rowling, developing an understanding of perseverance, creativity and achievement across different time periods.
Geography broadens children’s horizons as they compare Kenya with the Lake District, explore famous landmarks around the world and make meaningful links between place, culture and environment. First-hand experiences, including a visit to the Lake District Wildlife Park and a residential to Windermere, bring learning to life and strengthen real-world connections.
In Science, children develop curiosity and investigative skills through learning about living things, plants, habitats and food chains, alongside inventors and scientific innovation. Design and Technology encourages practical problem-solving through mechanisms, landmark construction and cooking, while Art inspires creativity through the study of artists such as Giuseppe Arcimboldo.
Computing supports creativity and logical thinking through music-making, coding and debugging, alongside a strong focus on online safety.
In Religious Education, children explore why the Bible is a special book for Christians, learn why the birth of Jesus is considered good news, and study the Easter story, developing understanding, respect and reflection around Christian beliefs.
By the end of Year 2, our intent is for children to be confident, curious and thoughtful learners, with a growing sense of place, possibility and belief in their own ideas.
