During the Autumn term in Year 3, the children will learn about local history by taking a step back in time and learning all about the Border Wars - this topic will include a visit to Brougham Castle, where they will explore one of the Clifford family castles used to protect England from the Scottish invasions. In English, they will explore stories with dragons and have a go at writing their own versions.
Throughout the Spring term, the children will learn about the rivers and mountains within the Lake district and begin to compare them with other parts of the world. To consolidate this learning, they visit the Blencathra Field Studies Centre, where the children complete science experiments to solve a mystery and then have an opportunity to go Bell-Boating in the Lake District. They will create their own Kenning poetry based on their experiences of the Lake District.
The children will finish their year with an in-depth study on the Late Neolithic Period, providing them with an opportunity to "live like cavemen" through an on-site camping and caveman experience. During this residential, the children will begin refining their culinary techniques by designing a stew. In English, the children explore recipes which they link to their experiences on the residential.
The children also get to develop their linguistic skills by learning French for the first time! Bien!
