Year 5

The first project within Year 5 focuses on the time period between the 4th and the 11th century-The Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings. This links to our key English texts, which are 'Beowulf' by Michael Morpurgo and 'King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table' by Marcia Williams. The children visit the Jorvik Centre, which immerses them in an authentic reconstruction of what life must have been like for the Vikings in the historic city of York. They put their Viking knowledge to the test in DT, where they design, measure, create and evaluate Viking longboats.

In the Spring term,  Year 5 begin by comparing the USA and Russia geographically and investigate how these two world powers competed in a race to explore space. The main learning comprises of learning about our solar system, with a visit from the wonderful, and engaging Wonderdome. Year 5 also explore the Pop Art movement, focusing specifically on Andy Warhol's famous Campbell Soup exhibition. The children explore other artists from a range of eras whilst visiting the Blackwell Arts House in Windermere. PE includes Gymnastics, Hockey and Rugby during the Spring term.

Summer brings the excitement of the camping residential to Ratlingate and a visit to the Solway coast. On this trip, the children explore what it must be like to camp outdoors and understand the importance of an appropriate shelter to stay safe. Children continue this learning when they research and create mini toilet tents in DT. Our English text 'Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief' by Rick Riordian provides a brilliant link to our History topic of Ancient Greece. Year 5 also learn about Animals including Humans and Living Things and their Habitats in Science.
