Maths
At Beaconside, we believe that every child can succeed in mathematics. We follow the Maths — No Problem! programme from Reception to Year 6, a carefully structured approach based on the highly regarded Singapore method of teaching maths.
Maths — No Problem! places a strong emphasis on deep understanding, reasoning, and problem solving, rather than simply memorising procedures. Children are encouraged to think, explain their ideas, and make connections, helping them to become confident and resilient mathematicians.
Lessons follow a set structure. Pupils first explore new concepts using practical resources, then move on to visual representations, before finally working with numbers and symbols. This ensures learning is secure and accessible for all children, while also providing appropriate challenge.
Discussion is at the heart of every lesson. Children are taught to explain their thinking using accurate mathematical language, listen to others’ ideas, and justify their answers. Mistakes are valued as part of the learning process, helping pupils to develop perseverance and a positive attitude towards maths.
By the time children leave us in Year 6, they are fluent in key skills, confident problem solvers, and able to reason mathematically — well-prepared for the next stage of their education.
In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), mathematics is taught through practical, play-based experiences that support children in meeting the Good Level of Development (GLD) statements for Number and Numerical Patterns. Children develop a secure understanding of numbers to 10, including counting, comparing quantities, and understanding number bonds, while also exploring patterns, relationships, and early calculation. Mathematical learning is carefully woven into both adult-led activities and continuous provision, allowing children to apply their skills in meaningful, real-life contexts. Through discussion, exploration, and problem solving, children build strong foundations in maths and develop a positive and confident attitude towards learning from the very start of their school journey.
Fluency
Across the school, pupils take part in daily arithmetic practice informed by the NCETM progression documents. This ensures that key number facts and calculation skills are taught in a carefully sequenced way, building steadily from year to year. Regular practice helps pupils develop fluency, accuracy, and confidence, enabling them to recall key facts efficiently and apply them within reasoning and problem-solving activities. This consistent approach supports long-term retention and allows children to focus their thinking on deeper mathematical understanding during lessons.
