Year 2016-17

Year 4

We are kick starting the Summer Term with our "Fantastical Beasts and where they come from" topic. We have had a visit from Zoolab, and look forward to going to Edinburgh Zoo.

Mrs Horn/Mrs Holmes and Miss Graham

4H have been studying the 'Eco Artist' Andy Goldsworthy. They have been inspired by his work, created only using natural materials. Independently 4H set about creating their own 'Eco Art' using natural materials found in the school grounds. (May 2017)

Year 4 Bikeability (Level 1 Certificate) 3rd and 10th November 2016

Both classes in year 4 took part in this invaluable training which irons out bad habits in their cycling and encourages safe riding. Level 1 is a pre-requisite to Level 2 training in Year 6, bearing this in mind, it really is an invaluable course to participate in. In the past we have found these sessions to be extremely beneficial, as we are able to encourage good practice from an early age. Both classes thoroughly enjoyed the training despite some wet and wintry conditions. However, I am pleased to say that all the children who took part obtained their Level 1 certificate, much to their credit.

Below: All Year 4 children who took part in the sessions with their, well earned, Bikeablility Level 1 certificates.

Year 4 Road Safety 17th October, 2016

Year 4 received a visit from haulage company, GIST who talked about road safety with the children. The children got to understand the difficulties that truck drivers can face when trying to spot children. They also learnt how they can help the drivers, and in turn, keep themselves safe. The afternoon was topped off with an opportunity to sit in the truck!

Birdoswald 2016

To conclude our project on the Mayan civilisation, the children took part in preparing and making some traditional Mexican food involving key ingredients in  their culture such as tomoatos, avocados and chilli. The children made homemade salsa and guacomole and also learnt key life skills such as preparing food both safely and hygienically.

4G had a very busy and exciting Science week. We investigated how sound traveled, tested materials to work out which would be best for soundproofing and we also made musical instruments out of clay. As well as this, we were visited by Ullswater pupils who put on a fantastic scientific demonstration involving water and air pressure.

Class 4G are taking part in weekly circuit sessions as part of their PE lessons this half term. They are learning about the benefits of exercise as well as developing, agility, fitness levels and balance.

As part of this term's "disaster" project, the children have been learning about states matter. Children have been using their observational skills to observe the density of different liquids and also how much surface area different liquids can cover when the same force is applied. The children have been making predictions and developing their scientific vocabulary by using words such as density and viscosity when providing their scientific reasoning.

Year 4 explored Brougham Castle whilst studying the History of Penrith. They did observational drawings, studied the defenses and played attacking/defending games.

Children in 4W wrote letters to local people to find out about the History of Penrith. As a result they visited The George Hotel, The Devonshire Arcade and Penrith Library. Thank you to all involved.

Whilst finding out about Penrith's history, 4W were invited on a railway trip to Carlisle - FREE!.

Thank you to Virgin Rail.
